How Do I Support My Friend Experiencing an Unexpected Pregnancy?

Finding out that your friend is pregnant can be shocking. How can you best support her during a situation filled with fear and uncertainty?

Just Be There

The best advice is the simplest. Your friend probably didn’t share her news with you, hoping you would fix things for her. She most likely wants someone to be with her as she walks through her situation.

Listen to her without judgment or offering suggestions.

You don’t need to be a cheerleader. While encouragement is helpful, be careful not to invalidate her experience. She might feel overwhelmed and confused about her options and not quite ready to look on the bright side. There will be plenty of time later for positivity.

Let her know you are on her side and here to support her.

Be Helpful

Your friend might have difficulty focusing on anything other than her pregnancy. In addition, she might be feeling nauseous and tired. Consider offering her help with household chores or driving her to her appointments.

Be specific. For example, instead of saying, “Let me know if I can help,” try, “Could I do your laundry on Saturday?”

Do Your Research

When your friend is ready to consider her options, she may ask for your opinion. Be prepared to answer her with facts, available resources, and data about her options. The way to best prepare to answer her questions is by doing your research.

Tell her about The Florida Pregnancy Support Services program. She can receive free support and resources through our pregnancy center network. Participating pregnancy centers offer:

  • Free pregnancy tests
  • Counseling
  • Education and training
  • Referrals to state, community, and medical resources
  • Adoption information
  • Options education

Have her call them at (866) 673-4673, fill out their confidential online contact form, or email them at floridapregnancy@optionline.org

Knowledge is power, and being equipped with helpful data can show your friend that you care and that you are a trusted voice in their decision.

Assure her that she doesn’t have to rush into a decision but can take the first step by getting confirmation of her pregnancy with an ultrasound through the Florida Pregnancy Support Services Program.

When you refer her to a trusted source for care, she’ll know you want only the best for her.
